Crossfit Santa Marta is large box with a healthy focus on class workouts. The coaching staff here are full of friendly energy and the workouts pack a lot of volume into an hour. If you’re a fan of grunt work, it’s definitely worth making a stop here. The box gets a good breeze, and is well equipped. If you are heading north to Palomino and beyond, this will be the last good place you’ll find to get a solid sweat on or lift heavy.
There are other non-affiliated boxes in Santa Marta, but this is the best. Read more here.
Crossfit Santa Marta is a large box on Rodadero beach, and the only affiliated box in Santa Marta. The vibrance of the coaching staff is reflected in the energy of the whole gym, making it likely that you’ll want to stop and train here for a while. One thing which sets crossfit Santa Marta apart from other Colombian boxes is that there isn’t a group of people following a separate program outside of the clases. Members are encouraged to take the classes, which eliminates any appearance of cliques. You clearly get the sense that the community is born out of the classes here.
However, if you’d prefer to train outside of class, with the exception of peak evening times, it’s very easy. You’ll have access to the rig, olympic lifting platforms, benches, rowers, airbike, ski erg, and the GHD, etc. There is also a mezzanine level with more rowers and an air-conditioned functional bodybuilding room.
You’re unlikely to find a better way to recover after class than to swim a few lengths in the beachside swimming pool in the luxury hotel opposite. Just ask at reception and you’ll get a guest pass.
Overall, it’s a very fun place to train and the classes are for all levels. However if you’re looking for somewhere to follow an athlete program for an extended period of time, there are boxes in other cities that are more set-up for individual programming.
Crossfit Santa Marta is a big warehouse structure in an enclosed gated complex with space to workout outside, secure parking, café, showers and a functional bodybuilding room.
The gym itself has a rig down each side, ropes hung from the high ceilings, rowers, an airbike, and a ski-erg. In addition to the usual kettlebells and dumbbells, they also make good use of the tires outside.
Workout of the day
The the classes at Crossfit Santa Marta pack a lot of volume into an hour. I was training here for a month, and it wasn’t unusual for the programme to run three WODs, one after another, with little recovery in between. They can often seem like slower paced workouts as opposed to fast sprint, or interval type sessions. However, the classes have two options for the final metcon. One for beginners, and a second for a more experienced crossfitters. Taking into account the heat, and that you might want to push the weight, I found that more often than not the class was enough of a workout without adding any additional exercises at the end.
They do not run any other programs beside from there classes. However, if you would like to make use of personal training or individualised programming, this is available.
The surrounding Area:
Crossfit Santa Marta is located on the outskirts of the main town, on Rodadero beach. It’s in the separate bay of Garia, immediately to the south of Santa Marta. The area has a lot of hotels and not much of a backpacker scene.
However, if you’re stopping by and here to top up your tan along with your fitness, it might be the perfect place. Rodadero beach is cleaner and calmer than Santa Marta’s Beach, especially if you head further south towards the river. It’s probably best to check Airbnb if you’re on a budget, but outside of Colombian holidays you can likely find a good deal from one of the hotels close by.
How to get there:
Central Santa Marta is still only a short bus ride away when you want to visit the old town. It’s also very much walkable, but the road which weaves up the hill separating the two bays probably isn’t something that seems appealing to walk regularly in the heat. The walk from the gym into the tourist area of the old town takes around an hour..
